Preface

Imagine you were suddenly thrust back in time a hundred or hundred and fifty years. Could you survive, what would be the hardest yet most important thing you needed to do? I would have to say cooking would rate right up there with hunting, fishing and gardening.

In Cooking Through the Centuries you will see the different methods by which food was prepared one, two and even three hundred years ago.

In a long-term survival situation one of the most important tasks will be in feeding the Group. Good wholesome food will determine to a great extent the level of comfort and the moral of the Group. Since there will be no gas or electric stoves, ovens and there will be no refrigeration we will be faced with a task completely different from what we are accustomed to. We will be forced to cook over an open fire. Either in a fireplace or over a campfire. With this in mind we feel there is a real need for a cook book that contains not only recipes but also directions on how to cook as our ancestors did.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the Preparing to Survive concept a brief explanation is called for. It is important that you understand we consider ourselves to be realist not survivalist, at least not in the common sense of the word. We feel that everyone should be prepared for a national catastrophic event, be it natural or man-made. We look at it as “Long Term Survival Insurance”. We feel this is as important if not more important than any insurance that you may have.

In order to properly prepare we feel we should prepare for the worst case scenario. This would be a catastrophic event which destroys the U.S. power grid, which will cause a cascading effect destroying the U.S. infrastructure which will in turn lead to wide spread anarchy. This can be the results of a number of events. These are events the Government warns us about almost daily.

The only way for your family to survive such an event is to get your family out of harm’s way. To do this you must have a remote evacuation point with supplies cached nearby.  We feel that it would be advantageous to bring together a like-minded Group of people.

The "Out of Harm’s Way" and "Preparing to Survive" book series are meant to help you prepare and survive long-term.

Throughout the "Out of Harm’s Way" and "Preparing to Survive" book series our philosophy has been that the only people that have actually lived through a long-term survival situation like we will be confronted with is our Ancestors and the Native Americans. For this reason we have taken most of the information and recipes found in this book from journals, books and papers from the 1600, 1700, and 1800’s.
